If you are interested in the history of small orchards on the high plains, I recommend a book entitled High Plains Horticulture: A History

In the early 1900’s there was quite a push to establish farms on the high plains, but the farming methods used in the midwest and eastern states simply did not work here. One thing, however, was successful; small backyard orchards that could be irrigated throughout the growing season.

The high plains fruit grower, however, should plan on losing about one crop out of every five (or seven) due to late, killing frosts.
